D'après le Talmud
(Mas. Yoma 77a), l'ange Dubiel, ange Gardien de Perse,
remplaça Gabriel dans ses fonctions après
que ce dernier fut tombé mommentanément
en disgrâce, et ce pour une période de 21
jours. Il fut l'un de ceux qui mit Israël au banc
des accusés. A ce moment d'après la légende,
tous les 70 ou 72 anges protecteurs d'une nation, à
l'exception de Mikaël, protecteur d'Israël,
étaient devenus corrompus. A cet égard,
Dubiel doit être vu comme un ange corrompu, un démon.
R. Johanan dit : De
cette heure, Gabriel fut conduit derrière le rideau
et reçu 40 coups, se voyant dit : "Si tu n'avais
pas exécuté le commandement du tout, et
bien, tu ne l'aurais tout simplement pas exécuté.
Mais puisque tu l'as éxecuté, pourquoi n'as-tu
pas fait comme on t'avait commandé? De plus : Ne
sais-tu pas cela : "On ne fait pas de rapport sur
un travail bâclé"?
Là dessus Dubiel,
l'ange gardien des Perses, fut introduit et mis à
sa place, et il officia pendant 21 jours. Voilà
ce qui est écrit : "Mais le Prince du Royaume
de Perse me remplaça 21 jours. Mais Michaël,
un des Princes des Anges, vint à mon aide, et fut
laissé là pour compte, derrière les
rois de Perses. 21 provinces, le port de Mashmahig lui
furent donné. Là dessus il dit : qu'Israël
me paye une taxe! Et ils firent ainsi. Ils rejetèrent
les Sages pour une taxe! Ils firent ainsi. Quand ils furent
sur le point de signer, Gabriel revint de derrière
le rideau et dit : Il est vain pour toi qui te lève
tôt, et t'assied tard, toi qui mange le pain du
labeur. Ainsi Il donne à Ses bien-aimés
dans leur sommeil... Personne ne fit attention à
lui.
Il dit devant lui :
Seigneur de l'Univers, si tous les hommes sages des autres
nations étaient dans un plateau de la balace, et
Daniel, l'homme du camp plaisant, dans l'autre, ne se
trouverait-il pas qu'il pèse plus qu'eux tous?
— Le Saint, benni par Lui, dit : Qui fait ainsi l'éloge
de mes enfants? Ils répondirent : "Seigneur
de l'Univers, c'est Gabriel. Il dit : Laissez le venir,
comme il est écrit : "Et par ces mots, j'ai
pu venir." Ayant commandé qu'ils le lui ammènent,
ainsi firent-ils. Il remarqua que Dubiel tennait le document
dans ses mains, et il voulu le lui prendre, mais ce dernier
l'avala. Certains dirent : Le document était écrit,
mais pas signé. D'autres dirent : Il était
également signé, mais il l'a avalé,
la signature a été gâchée.
Par conséquent, il y a ici des personnes du royaume
de Perse qui sont obligées de payer une taxe quand
d'autres en sont exempts.
(J'ai traduit ce texte
de l'anglais. Malheureusement, c'est en vieil anglais
et j'ai donc eu beaucoup de mal. Aussi la traduction est-elle
très peu satisfaisante. Si quelqu'un sait où
trouver une bonne traduction française, qu'il ou

R. Johanan said : In
that hour Gabriel was led out behind the curtain and received
forty fiery strokes, he being told: If you had not executed
the command at all, well, you simply would not have executed
it. But since you did execute it, why did you not do as
you were commanded? Furthermore: Don't you know that:
‘One brings no report about mischief’?
Thereupon Dubiel, the
guardian angel of the Persians, was brought in and placed
in his stead, and he officiated for twenty-one days. This
is what is written : But the prince of the kingdom of
Persia withstood me one and twenty days; but lo, Michael,
one of the chief princes, came to help me; and I was left
over there beside the kings of Persia. Twenty-one provinces
and the port of Mashmahig were given to him. Thereupon
he said: Put down for me Israel for the polltax! They
did so. Put down the Sages for the poll-tax! They did
so. When they were about to sign, Gabriel came forth from
behind the curtain and said : It is vain for you that
ye rise early, and sit up late, ye that eat the bread
of toil; so He giveth unto His beloved in sleep... No
attention was paid to him.
He said before Him : Lord of the Universe, if all the
wise men of other nations were in one scale of the balance,
and Daniel, the man of pleasant parts, in the other, would
he not be found to outweigh them all? — The Holy
One, blessed be He, said: Who is it that pleads the merit
of my children? They replied: Lord of the Universe, it
is Gabriel. He said: Let him come in, as it is written:
‘And I am come [in] because of thy words’. Having
commanded that they bring him in, they brought him in.
He noticed that Dubiel held the document in his hand,
and he wanted to take it from him, but the former swallowed
it. Some say: [The document] was written out, but not
signed. Others say: It was also signed, but as he swallowed
it, the signature was blotted out. Hence there are some
people in the kingdom of Persia who are obliged to pay
poll-tax, while others are free from it.
